Between the rivers
The ice age gave us a fascinating contrast to the level coastal landscape: The valley of river Recknitz winds its way through bogs and meadows to the Ribnitz Bodden.
The extraordinary riches of this area of outstanding natural beauty is best explored on a bicycle, on horseback or in a canoe.And apart from the lush nature there are impressive architectural monuments to be discovered, such as the oldest churches on the Western Pomeranian mainland or enchanted castles and ruins of citadels and Swedish entrenchments.
Saltwater and peat have been used for health since 1822 in Bad Sülze, the oldest saltwater and mud spa in northern Germany. Today the rehab clinic offers modern spa medicine in orthopedics, neurology and rheumatology to patients and outpatient health resort guests. The spa gardens provide recreation amidst their old trees. The highlight of the year is the dahlia festival on the second weekend in September. You may be there and witness the most beautiful dahlia being chosen from among more than 6,000 plants of 270 different varieties.
Where the Recknitz hills rise higher than elsewhere above the riverbank lies the town of Marlow. A bird park opened in its outskirts on 14 hectares of land in 1994. You may encounter 150 different species of local and exotic birds there, mostly in open-air enclosures and in a new hothouse.
You may also watch cranes, ostriches and storks from up close. Nearby a modern estate of chalets is available all year.
