Cranes

Cranes are birds of passage and often referred to as 'birds of luck'. They can reach an age of up to 30 years and are well known from Sweden to Japan.

Some say cranes belong to the most fascinating animals on our continent. They were even appreciated from mystic-religious reasons in the ancient Roma.

Every autumn a large part of the Northern European crane population can be found in the region Rügen - Bock - Kirr. It is their most famous rest area in all of Europe and has been used by them for more than 150 years.

Many bird watchers are attracted by thousands of these impressive birds resting here on their way from Scandinavia to the warm South. In the month of October when cranes are looking for some food and a place to sleep their population in the national park "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft" area can reach a number of up to 40.000.

If you are interested in further information about cranes, where to watch them or even to experience them on a guided tour you should contact the crane information centre near the town of Stralsund.
